The Prekindergarten Disabilities Endorsement, as described in Rule 6A-4.01792, F.A.C., Specialization Requirements for the Prekindergarten Disabilities Endorsement, will be required by July 1, 2011, for teachers who teach either course number 7650030 or 7650130 as listed in the Florida Course Code Directory. This endorsement can be added to primary education, elementary education (K-6), early childhood education, or any exceptional student education Florida educator certificate.

Exceptions to this requirement are teachers who:

  • have certification in preschool education (birth through age four years)
  • have certification in prekindergarten/primary education (age three years through grade three)

The Florida Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Services has developed a set of prekindergarten modules for districts to offer as an approved district add-on endorsement program. There are three modules: 1. Typical and Atypical Development, 2. Assessment, and 3. Curriculum. Each module includes sessions which contain agendas, Power Point presentations, trainer notes, materials and resources. These modules were designed to be downloaded and offered through a facilitated model. This is NOT a self-paced online course. This option is available for teachers in lieu of taking college courses to earn the endorsement.

Before offering these modules for credit, a school district must submit a plan to the Florida Department of Education that includes a time frame for the course offering, a list of the local resources for teachers and families of prekindergarten children with disabilities, and any changes that will be made to the content. The Prekindergarten Disabilities Endorsement District Add-On Plan must be submitted to Ms. Marilyn Hibbard, Program Specialist for PreK Disabilities, at marilyn.hibbard@fldoe.org for approval.
